Pay monthly or all at once. Pay early whenever you like. Cancel any time and get the unused part back. Nobody here is trying to catch you out on a technicality.

days of grace after a late payment — not 10. Our billing system keeps retrying, we keep emailing, and your coverage stays in force while you sort it out.
What you actually control
Billing is the part of insurance people deal with every single month. It should be the part that fights you least.
Pay monthly, or all at once
Spread it over the term or pay the year up front, from a card or a bank account. In some states the annual payment skips the installment fee entirely.
Pay early whenever you want
There is a button for it in your Member Dashboard under Upcoming Bills. You never have to wait for the due date to clear a balance.
Having a month? Just ask
You get 30 days before a late payment cancels anything. If you need longer than that, email or chat with us and a person will look at your situation.
Leave whenever you like
Cancel from your dashboard in a few clicks. No cancellation fee, and unused premium comes back to you. You can also schedule a future date and change your mind before it arrives.
What happens when money's tight
Grace periods, fees and refund rules are set by state filings and vary between carriers. Here is how ours compare with what the industry typically publishes.
| Billing term | Goodcover | Typical carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Grace period after a missed payment | 30 days | Usually 10 to 20 days, set by state law |
| Can you ask for more time? | Yes — email or chat, and a person reviews it | Rarely offered, and almost never published |
| Cancellation fee | None | Varies by carrier and state |
| Refund of unused premium | Yes, prorated to the day you cancel | Varies; some carriers keep a short-rate penalty |
| Schedule your own cancellation date | Yes, from your dashboard | Usually a phone call |
| Penalty for a one-off card payment | None | Some carriers drop your autopay discount for the rest of the term |
| Fees explained before you buy | Policy and installment fees documented in our guides | Commonly disclosed only on the bill after purchase |

A $15 problem shouldn't become a $1,500 one
Renters insurance is one of the cheapest things you pay for, and losing it is one of the most expensive. That gap is the whole reason we give you 30 days.
A payment fails
A card expires, a bank account runs short, a bill lands two days before payday. It is rarely a decision — it is timing.
Coverage ends
On a short grace period, a policy can cancel for non-payment before you have noticed anything went wrong.
Your landlord finds out
Most leases require continuous coverage. Your property manager is notified, and you get a non-compliance notice.
It gets expensive
Some properties force-place coverage that protects them, not you, and bill you for it. A gap on your record can also raise what the next carrier charges.
Questions people actually ask
What happens if my payment is late?
Goodcover policies have a 30-day grace period for late payments. To prevent cancellation for non-payment, make sure payment is received by the date listed in your late-payment email.
Can I pay my bill early?
Yes. Automatic billing processes payments when a bill is due or outstanding, and there is a button in your Member Dashboard under Upcoming Bills to pay before your scheduled due date.
Can I change the date I get charged?
We have some flexibility about adjusting your payment date on a monthly basis. Contact support through chat or at support@goodcover.com and we will look at what is possible for your policy.
Can I pay for the year instead of monthly?
Yes. You can pay monthly or annually, from a credit card or a bank account. Some states charge an installment fee on an annual payment and others do not.
Are there fees on my policy?
Depending on your state and policy terms there may be a policy fee, charged once at the beginning of your term, and an installment fee added to each premium payment. Both are determined by state insurance filings.
Is there a fee to cancel?
No. There is no cancellation fee, and you receive a refund for unused premium. Installment and policy fees paid during the policy term are not refunded.
My payment failed. Do I need to submit it again?
No. Our billing cycle runs every night and automatically retries payments that are due or outstanding. Once your payment method is ready to use, you can wait for the overnight run.

Grace periods, policy and installment fees, and refund calculations vary by state and policy terms, and are determined by state insurance filings. A minimum earned premium may affect a refund if you cancel early. See your policy documents for the terms that apply to your coverage.
